Exposed farming

Operating in some of the world’s most exposed marine environments has shaped the way we farm salmon. From an early stage, we recognized that site selection and ocean conditions are critical to fish welfare, growth, and long-term sustainability. This understanding has driven us to continuously explore how exposure to stronger currents and open waters can be used as an advantage in responsible aquaculture.

Sea lice have been the industry’s greatest challenge for many years, compelling us to prioritize solutions to combat this issue. Our efforts have been concentrated on initiatives aimed at effectively managing the sea lice problem.

One of our most significant and successful endeavours has been farming in exposed sites, which has yielded numerous benefits including fewer sea lice, faster salmon growth and better health.

Hiddenfjord started farming at exposed sites as early as 1988, moving our pens from the sheltered Skálafjørður to the exposed Gøtuvík. This pioneering move was unprecedented at the time, demonstrating our commitment to pushing the boundaries of aquaculture. Since then, we have consistently pushed for advancements in exposed farming practices.

Exposure to continuous seawater renewal at these sites impedes the accumulation of sea lice.

Hiddenfjord has pioneered farming at exposed locations and can confidently say that we farm in the most exposed sites in the world, both in terms of current strength and wave height.

Our continued commitment to innovation and adherence to rigorous standards ensures sustainable aquaculture practices even in the face of challenges like sea lice infestation.
