Low-emission
transportation

On 10/10/2020, Hiddenfjord became the first salmon producer in the world to stop using air freight. By switching entirely to sea freight only, we drastically reduced our carbon footprint while ensuring the same high-quality, fresh salmon reaches our customers.

Solving the freshness challenge

After deciding to eliminate air freight for environmental reasons, we faced a major challenge: how to transport fresh salmon to distant markets while maintaining quality and shelf life.

Sea freight takes longer than air travel, but through extensive testing and innovation, we developed the optimal temperature control and production methods to make it possible.

The unbroken cold chain

At our processing facility in the Faroe Islands, each box of salmon is carefully packed into temperature-controlled containers.

The temperature is precisely set and maintained throughout the journey, and each container is securely sealed before departure.

Real-time temperature monitoring

From start to finish, the temperature inside each container is closely monitored and recorded, guaranteeing consistent cold conditions.

This meticulous control is a key factor in making fresh salmon transport by sea a viable and sustainable alternative.

Air vs. sea – A 94% CO₂ reduction

Our transition from air freight to sea freight has led to a 94% reduction in CO₂ emissions for overseas transportation, significantly lowering our carbon footprint.
